چکیده

The use of natural fibres as reinforcement in polymer composites has generated much interest in recent years due to environmental legislation and improvements on natural fibre performance and process-abilities. This research investigated the use of natural hemp fibre as reinforcement for the possibility of producing fibre reinforced Sheet Moulding Compounds (SMC) as an alternative to glass fibres in the industrial applications ranging from building construction, automotive, to aerospace, where a good fire performance and mechanical properties are essential. This work shows that NFSMC achieved equivalent level of fire and mechanical properties that glass fibre SMC (GFSMC) has provided. Its Heat Release Rate (HRR) in the fire reaction tests reached 150 kWm -2 which is better than that of fire retardant GFSMC; tensile strength reached 44 MPa and Yang’s modulus in excess of 14 GPa, which are as the same as the high performance polymeric GFSMC. This report was worked on two aspects of the NFSMC: the selections of raw materials, formulation and a suitable manufacturing system; and the material characterisation and functionality.

Hemp Fibre as an Alternative to Glass Fibre in Sheet Moulding Compound: Part 1. Influence of Fibre Content and Surface Treatment on Mechanical Properties

Hemp fibre mat reinforced polyester composites were fabricated using a conventional sheet moulding compound (SMC) process. The influence of fibre and CaCO3 filler content on strength and stiffness of the HF-SMCs is reported and compared with data for chopped glass fibre reinforced sheet moulding compounds (GF-SMCs). In addition the influence of alkaline and silane treatments of the hemp fibres ...

Optimization of Process Parameters in Drilling of Smc Composites Using Taguchi Method

Original scientific paper This paper has presented and discussed machinability in the drilling of SMC (Sheet Mould Compound) A-Class composite materials using Taguchi's DoE method. The thrust forces, surface roughness and push-out peel-up delamination behaviour in drilling process for glass fibre reinforced SMC composites have been evaluated. The experimental results and the contribution ratio ...

Effects of hole stress concentration and its mitigation on the tensile strength of sheet mould,ng compound (SMC-R50) composites

The hole stress concentration effects on the tensile strength of SMC-R50 sheet moulding compound composites were studied with consideration being given to both centric and eccentric hole locations. It is shown that the tensile strength of the R50 material is improved by applying a transverse normal pressure around the hole boundary. A few preliminary experiments indicate that the fatigue life o...

The 13th International Conference on Flow Processing in Composite Materials Computational Fluid Dynamics Applied to Composites Manufacturing

Introduction Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to simulate the flow during vacuum infusion [12], sheet moulding compound (SMC) [3-4], the auto-clave process [5] and twin-screw extrusion. Three-dimensional geometries were studied and porous media and multiphase flows were treated with a homogenous approach. The advantages and drawbacks of such a methodology are here discussed base...

Bagasse Fiber Composites-A Review

A composite material is made by combining two or more materials to give a unique combination of properties, one of which is made up of stiff, long fibres and the other, a binder or 'matrix' which holds the fibres in place. The fibres are strong and stiff relative to the matrix and are generally orthotropic. More recently natural fibers have been employed in combination with plastics. The abunda...
